On Thursday, May 28, 2009 Cemí Underground will bring to El Barrio a major cultural event that will showcase the many and varied talents found in our community. We call this event Cemi Underground’s 2009 All-Star Extravaganza.
Cemi Underground’s 2009 All-Star Extravaganza is a cultural event and collaboration between Cemí Underground and Friends of Cemi Underground that include: Boricuation, LatinosNYC.ning.com, Tamucono Tanama Yucayeque Taino and Ku Karey Spiritual Circle, Art By Mia, Elena "Mamarazzi" Marrero, Taller Boricua Gallery, Los Pleneros de la 21 and many individuals who have supported Cemí Underground these past 2 years.
Cemí Underground is a cultural venue that for the past two years has hosted a variety of cultural events that include book signings, poetry readings, art exhibitions and Latino comedy.
We propose to hold Cemi Underground’s 2009 All-Star Extravaganza in a large venue that will allow larger audiences to sample the events that have made an impact on the artistic life of El Barrio and the general Latino population in NYC.
We would like to encourage collaborations with all local community based organizations in El Barrio to maintain our important and necessary educational linkage in the community. Please post the attached flyer for your constituents to see.
Cemí Underground – Facts-at-a-Glance
Our Mission at Cemí Underground is to promote Puerto Rican/Latino artists, culture and heritage. We accomplish this goal by raising funds through the sale of tee shirts with designs that depict our cultural icons; hard to find books about and by Puerto Rican/Latino authors; handmade crafts made by local artists and by producing unique performance and educational events that allow our the community to experience the beauty of our cultural heritage. We firmly believe that the legacy of our ancestors be respected and honored. Our tee shirt designs and handmade crafts are inspired by the legacy of our Taino, African and Spaniard/European ancestors.
Cemí Underground has been the home of the following:
Art:
• Olga Ayala's Hecho A Mano Polymer Clay Creations
• Don Pedro Tees, Poet Tees and Taino fashion line of t-shirts
• Various art exhibits by such artists as Elena “Mamarazzi” Marrero, Yasmin Hernandez, Mia Hernandez, and Amy Ponce among others.
Performance/Poetry Series – Open Mic Series:
• Open Mic Poetry – Noche Taino Hosted by La Bruja
• Open Mic Poetry Specials Hosted by Raul Rios
• El Boogie Down Comedy Show
• Cemí Cinema - Independent Films for El Barrio
• Yearly March Women’s History Month: celebrating Latina Artists
We hope to see you at the biggest cultural event to precede the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. |
